Ave, Dulcissima Maria (ssaattbb, a capella)
Because the text of this song is mainly Latin, Kevin's approach was traditional. The opening phrases of praise are very much in the style of Giovanni Gabrielli, especially in the use of divided choruses. But, in his mission to bring the music to the people, Kevin included within the song the English translation of the Latin text, coming in the form of an announcement from the tenor soloist (representing the angel Gabriel). The song's style evolves throughout, moving closer and closer to a more contemporary style. In this example, you hear the declamatory opening of the work followed by the ending section in which the choirs are singing in a more folk-like fashion, as Latin and English texts are once again combined to conclude the prayer. While certainly requiring more vocal forces due to the voicing, this song does not lose those moments of 'musical intimacy' that Kevin is so good at creating. This song is published by Mark Foster Music, a division of Shawnee Press, and can be ordered through their website.
Bright Morning Star (satb, accompanied) $1.50
Written for Christmas Eve services at Trinity Episcopal Church in Coshocton, OH. The text here is Kevin's own, focusing on the contrast of darkness and light inherent in the Christmas message. This contrast comes to life through the harmonies, which include a memorable chorus that fits well in the advent season.
Clap Your Hands (satb, a capella) $1.50
This energetic song has a dance-like flare to it. The shifting meter follows the text naturally, making it easy to learn. This song also serves a dual purpose - it can be used as a general anthem or it can be used as a call to worship by singing only one of the verses. Since the song has three verses, this essentially provides a choir with three separate calls to worship and an anthem - with only one song to learn!
Come Lord Jesus (ssatb, a capella) $1.50
This song is perhaps one of Kevin's most beautiful to date. The colors in the harmonies require a finely-tuned group of singers to bring the song to its full effect. The text was written by Kevin's wife, Lisa, and is appropriate for the advent season.
Come Unto Me (satb, accompanied) $1.50
A general anthem with a memorable tune. While it is not difficult to learn, the harmonies are surprisingly rich and paint the text nicely. This is an approachable anthem for just about any choir, providing an excellent opportunity to sing musically. This excerpt is from the chancel choir at Westlake United Methodist Church.
Little David, Play on Your Harp (satb, a capella) $1.50
Another playful setting. The spiritual arrangement begins rather straight-forward, alternating the chorus with solo opportunities on the verses. The song builds energy as it progresses, adding complex layers underneath the simple melody - resulting in a percussive portrayal of David's harp. A lot of fun for an audience, but challenging for the performers. This excerpt captures the second half of the arrangement, as the song becomes a bit "laid-back".
Put On Love (satb, a capella) $1.40
A sensitive setting of a popular text from Colossians. This song is full of colors that are typical of Kevin's choral style. It it both gentle and dramatic and requires a great deal of balance and patience to reach its full effect. Approachable by many levels of choirs, but challenging.
A Sonnet (satb, a capella) $1.50
"A Sonnet" is an innocent, playful sounding madrigal with many inside jokes. Originally written for a high school group, Kevin thought it would be fun to exploit the sometimes-questionable nature of Shakespeare's text. As a result, when you study each part carefully, you can find the true nature of each section coming out. (Just imagine how high school guys might choose to interpret Shakespeare a bit differently than the girls would...)
Because of Kevin's passion for small group singing, this song is full of excellent vocal lines for each section. While the harmonies seem typical of an English madrigal, there are several moments that have a much more contemporary feel to them. This complete recording is of a live performance by the Senior Choir at Olmsted Falls High School.
Incidentally, Kevin highly recommends the vocal ensemble, "Quink", and never misses an opportunity to hear them perform live.
Were You There? (satb, a capella) $1.50
This setting paints an almost impressionistic picture - supporting the natural beauty of the melody with open sounding harmonies and shifting colors. While the palate remains consistent, the nature of the text is beautifully captured in subtle ways. Simple to learn and extremely effective. This excerpt picks up towards the end of the second verse.
